On my agenda for the next 46 days:

This year, February 14th has not only marked the day to celebrate love, but also the day to start Lent for 40 days.

Okay, I’ll admit this outright: I’m not overly religious. Although I’ve been baptized and got to attend catholic education at school, my parents have raised me to be open minded about religion. They taught me to see religion like beauty: It’s always in the eye of the beholder, and everyone is welcome to have a different view on it. However, I do love religious traditions such as Christmas, Easter celebrations, church weddings of our friends, or the baptism of our friends’ babies. Religion is mysterious and beautiful to me, and quite often I feel the wish to learn more about it – not only about catholic beliefs, but rather about all the different kinds of beliefs there are. But that’s a story for another time, I guess.

Anyways, there is one catholic tradition I surreptitiously take part in every year: Lent.

The 46 days between Ash Wednesday and Easter (the 40 days of Lent do not count the six Sundays) mark a time when people forgo something to honor the sacrifice of Jesus during his 40 days in the desert.

Religious or not, I think  it’s a good time to practice a little self-restraint. It’s like a mini New Year’s resolution, one could say. A whole year without sweets seems impossible. Forty days? That’s more practical.

Over the past few years, I’ve tried to restrain from certain things, mainly but not limited to certain foods or drinks (sometimes quite successfully, sometimes not so much). One year I also used those 40 days to break an old habit and stopped watching TV (back then there was no Netflix) for that time period.

This year, I take Lent as an occasion to foster my awareness regarding my food consumption.

I’m not going to lie: My metabolism is different now compared to how it was ten years ago. Eating pasta and pizza every other day didn’t make any difference back then. Quite the opposite to now, when it seems like carbs have the nasty habit to cling to my hips as if I was their soulmate. The older I get the more I realize how important it is to supply my body with essential nutrients and that the food I’m consuming has a tremendous impact on my overall well-being.

That’s why I’ve been seeing a nutritionist with whom I’ve worked out a plan and little guide to stick to when it comes to my diet for the next 46 days (I’m not intending on using Sunday as cheat day, but ask me about that on Sunday again).

The plan is constructed in a way that is taking into consideration all my food intolerances and makes sure my body is provided with all the nutrients and energy it needs. The goal of this diet  plan is not to loose weight, but rather focus on supporting my body with nutrients that help to balance out insufficiencies. I’m really excited for this little project and especially for its consequences, which promise to be more energy, clear complexion, and overall well-being.

Are you giving up on something during Lent, or breaking an old habit, such as abstaining from the TV or the digital world? I’m curious to know!

On a fashion related note: I’m craving Spring so much already that I took my beloved Chloé boots out for a spin. Paired with my favorite pair of jeans and an embroidery blouse I’m patiently waiting for warmer days. Ready when you are, dear Spring!
